Qantas is set to enhance domestic air travel across Australia by launching two new non-stop routes that will connect Perth directly with Newcastle and Hobart. These services are designed to reduce travel times, eliminate inconvenient transfers, and offer fresh opportunities for both leisure and business travellers heading between the country’s eastern and western corridors.
New Perth–Newcastle Flights to Launch September 8
For the first time, residents in New South Wales’ Hunter Region will gain a direct air link to Western Australia. Beginning September 8, Qantas will operate non-stop flights between Perth and Newcastle three times a week, on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays. The five-hour journey will be served by a 150-seat Airbus A319, creating over 900 new seats each week and totaling more than 45,000 seats annually.
This new service addresses a long-standing gap in connectivity. Until now, travellers between Newcastle and Perth had to endure a detour through Sydney or face extended driving times. The introduction of this route removes those obstacles, delivering a much-needed air corridor for tourism, family travel, and business, particularly within Australia’s booming resources sector.
Economic Boost and Strategic Value for the Hunter Region
The new flights are expected to inject over $21 million into the local economy each year while supporting the creation of more than 70 new jobs. The direct air access also positions the Hunter Region for increased engagement with Western Australia’s economic activities, including mining, energy, and infrastructure projects.
With improved access, the route opens the door for increased fly-in fly-out operations, supports inter-regional trade, and unlocks broader domestic and international travel opportunities. Passengers flying from Newcastle to Perth will also gain one-stop global access via Perth Airport to major international destinations such as London, Paris, Johannesburg, and seasonal flights to Rome.
Perth–Hobart Connection Reinstated for Broader National Access
Alongside the Newcastle announcement, Qantas will also restore its direct Perth–Hobart service. The reinstated route, starting September 26, will run three times weekly — also on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays — and will be operated with the same Airbus A319 aircraft. The service is scheduled year-round, excluding May, June, and August, and will offer up to 32,000 seats annually.
This renewed service reconnects Tasmania to Western Australia’s capital without stopovers, a move that supports both business ties and leisure travel. The return of this direct flight further strengthens national cohesion and gives Tasmanian travellers more seamless access to the country’s west.
Affordable Launch Fares and Booking Access
To encourage early bookings, Qantas is offering promotional economy fares for both new routes starting from $299 one-way. These introductory rates are available until 11:59pm AEST on Monday, June 2, or while seats last. Bookings can be made directly through the airline’s website.
This pricing structure offers a cost-effective solution for travellers seeking a direct and efficient route across the country — particularly for those managing frequent work travel or planning family reunions.
National Travel Made Simpler and Smarter
The addition of these two routes reflects Qantas’ strategy to simplify domestic travel, strengthen regional access, and support Australia’s broader economic network. As more Australians seek direct flight options that avoid larger, congested transit airports, the demand for point-to-point services continues to grow.
By providing efficient cross-country links, Qantas supports a more connected Australia — one where residents of regional cities no longer need to rely on capital hubs to access the opposite side of the continent. These new flights make interstate travel more direct, more comfortable, and more responsive to the evolving needs of passengers and industries alike.
With expanded reach from Perth to Newcastle and Hobart, the national carrier demonstrates its continued commitment to investing in regional air infrastructure and improving travel experiences across Australia’s vast geography.
